The inflation data released by the US yesterday is 8.3% higher by 0.1% month over month resulted to a panic selling in the stock market, the worst sell off in the market since 2020.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures the change in prices paid by consumers for goods and
services. The CPI reflects spending patterns for each of two population groups all urban consumers and urban wage earners and clerical workers. The all urban consumer group represents about 93 percent of the total US population.

All US indices tumbled and drop significantly last night.

The market is expecting a faster take up by the feds to raise interest rates. As we know the high CPI value release today is very persistent and investors are worried that it will cause sudden spikes in prices for basic commodities.

Tech stocks, retailers and banks were among the worst hit where the market eked out all gains from the past four days of rally.

Wall street also is quite worried that we may be in fact heading to a recession.

The last four days rally signified a confidence last time by the market that the inflation is already in control, but the results is showing otherwise.

VIX or volatility index which is a “fear” gauge for the market managed to go up by as much as 8% today. This index moves opposite to what the market is doing.

We are expecting the local markets to follow the US move.

One of the perks of investing regularly in the PSE market is by receiving passive income from stocks in terms of Dividends. Dividends are incentives given by the company to their shareholders. You don’t have to do anything but wait when they are going to announce and check for the income to be distributed in our accounts.

Below is a sample dividend given by DMC. I like stocks that gives regular dividends as it always feels that you are a part of the company, and they share the blessings that they have to us as an investor.

Recently I received the dividend worth 4,800 pesos. Net amount is 4,320php as there is a tax of 480php.

DMC is currently up by 20% from the time the dividends were declared. Consider also the short term drop in price as the market tries to priced in the outflow of funds from the company. If the stock is strong, it will recover in the future.

Not all Stocks provide dividends so select properly those that share their earnings to its investors.

Here’s the list of upcoming dividends for Philippine stock exchange stocks this September.

Remember that there are two types of dividends, first is the common or preferred dividends and stock dividends. As the name implies stock dividends are given in form of stocks while common or preferred dividends are given in terms of cash.

Don’t be confused which type you are receiving.  I normally go for “common dividends” as opposed to preferred type of dividends. Common dividends are better if you want more liquidity on the stock, you are trading. Make sure to check this under “type of security” before buying.

Important dates for dividends include ex-date and payment date. If you want to avail the dividends, buy before the ex-date. You can sell the stock on ex-date and still receive the corresponding cash dividends on the payment date.
